Why was the D-Day battle at Normandy geographically significant during World War II?

It opened up an eastern front in the European theater of war.

It secured a foothold for the Allies in the Pacific.

It opened up a western front in the European theater of war.

It secured for the Allies an important port on the Mediterranean Sea.

I assume this is meant to be a multiple choice question....so the answer has to be the third choice: "It opened up a western front in the European theater of war".

Two of the answers clearly have nothing to do with the invasion of Europe at Normandy, France (the ones referring to the Pacific and Mediterranean are clearly not the right answers.)

The opening of an "eastern front" actually occurred along and close to the Russian border.
