Favorite WWII airplanes?

What are your favorite warplanes from WWII from both allied and axis sides, Pacific and European theater.

I`ll try to be as objective as possible. I and many others admire many aircraft from WW2 for the reasons given below

For its impact on the war. The Hurricane. No Hurri, no victory in the Battle of Britain.

For sheer lifting capability. the Lancaster. Nothing else could carry a ten ton bomb that was 22 feet long.

For range and fighting capabilities combined nothing would beat a P51 Mustang.

For sheer bloody mindedness and grit. the B-17, B-24 and the men who flew in them. Boris, I`m 50 Miles from your Grandad`s field at Rougham and next time I drive past the tower I`ll give thanks to him in particular.

From the Axis side.

The 109 for soldiering on so long and still being at least partially effective

The Fw190 for its effectiveness in several roles.

The Ju88 for doing so many things so well.

But favourite? I have two left

An Aircraft built from materials that all of the accepted rules stated were passe in a modern warcraft.

Designed as an unarmed fast bomber which, unlike all the other fast bombers before it, could show a clean pair of heels to the enemy`s fighters until they started screwing jets under the wings.

Take away the bomb bay, slap a radar in the front and four bloody great cannon in the belly and you get one of the best night fighters of the war.

Put bigger bomb bay doors on it and you get an aircraft capable of taking 4000 pounds of ordnance to Berlin in half the time with half the engines and 20% of the men that you need to get the same load there in a B17.

It is, of course, the Mossie

An aircraft designed by a genius as a point defence fighter.

Redesigned so it could range as far as eastern Europe carrying cameras to find out what the enemy was doing

Modified again so that it would carry bombs into the enemy`s trenches and fortifications around the world.

Fitted with engines that would increase in power from 950HP to 2400HP with no major airframe changes apart from the size of the tail.

The wings would end up carrying weapons with a firepower 8 times that of the original.

The name Spitfire was a stroke of genius.

My Fave?

For no other reasons that she was, and is, a symbol of freedom, the sound she makes is like no other aircraft, even those fitted with the same Merlin engine, and most importantly she is just so sodding beautiful both to a layman and as an engineering project I would have to pick the absolute queen.

The Spitfire

Ray.

I like corsair cuz the wings shapes and the spit fire
Messersm. Bf 109.... 6 of their aces had over 200 kills. One of them, Erich Hartmann, destroyed 352 Russian planes. They flew, and racked up staggeringly high scores over North Africa, France, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Poland, and, in the end, Germany itself. Two hundred aerial victories each. By comparison, the top U.S. aces of World War Two achieved twenty or more.
I don't who wouldnt say the p-51
me 109 me 262. p40 warhawk p 38 lightning
P-40, B-17 on the Allied side, Japanese Zero and Stuka bomber on the Axis side
P-51 Mustang. If you've ever been to an air show where one of these awesome fighters flew, and you heard that unmistakable sound of then P-51, you would understand what a superior fighter it was for its time.
Something British to be sure...I am tired of listening to all the whinny limeys complain that we don't give their engineering firms enough credit. Come on mates! Tell this yank what my answer should be!
De Havilland Mosquito, the "Wooden Wonder"

Supermarine Spitfire, and sentimental favourite but not second class, the Hawker Hurricane.

Avro Lancaster: the heaviest lifting bomber of WW2 (yes, more than the B-29), and the best bomber over Europe.

Focke-Wulf 190D, an incredible aircraft, too little too late for the Reich

P-51: This "all-American" fighter was built to a British Spec, using a British engine. Bloody good.

I cannot recommend anything Japanese really
The P-40 Warhawk and the P-51 Mustang.
I am partial to the B 17,my Grandfather was a radio operator on one during WWII ,he was in the 94 th bomber group,331 st squadron and flew over Europe,he was also one of the Lucky Bastards,I have included a link to a page that contains a diary of a tail gunner, truly great reading, enjoy,as far as fighters go I would have say the P-51D and the Spitfire are 2 of the best prop fighters ever made, the ME 109 was no joke either

EDIT:Ray W, Thank You ,I know he will appreciate it
The British Spitfire was all that stood between Britain and the Nazis during the battle of Britain, plus it was probably the best flying plane of WW2... and the P-51 was it's equal.
? P-38J Model Lightning - concentrated firepower!

? P-47 Bubble Canopy - Eight .50 cals of fury!

? P-40C - Great profile, AVG held off the Japs in China!

? Spitfire was the beauty queen, but don't forget the Hurricane and Mosquito, English Friends!

? F6F Hellcat - gave the Zero a rough time and kicked butt

? A6M Zero for it's great looks and maneuverability

? FW-190 - better landing gear than the ME-109 and nice radial engine
i dont think that one plane deserves that credit

the spitfire awsome plane engine in it the merlin was what made the p-51 mustang a well kwon fact

the hawker hurricane its performance in the battle of brittan was very significant

the hawker tempest a lesser known plane but the fastest plane in raf service it shot down 638 v-1 flyng bombs

the mosquito it was made out of wood cos we were short of steel a very capable plane not given the credit it deserved
P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, P-38 Lighting, Bf -109 Messerschmitt, Fw-190 Focke-Wolf, Fiesler Storche, A6M Mitsubitsi (Zero), F8U Corsair, Raiden, Spitfire, and the Mosquito bomber.
