Why Gen. MacArthur?

why was Gen. MacArthur made supreme commander of Pacific theater? when the majority of the fighting was done by the Navy %26amp; Marine corp. was it because it's always been the custom of the American military to give supreme command to the Army, he was the best man for job, was it the Gov. way of making up for leving him and his men hanging when the Japs invaded the Phillippines, or was it because he was Roseavealts *** hole buddy?

MacArthur made his reputation in WW1 although it wasn't really deserved. He was in command of US troops in some small skirmish and in typical American fashion, he was credited with a great military victory.

As for saving Australia, he was prepared to give it to Japan. HE WANTED TO RETREAT. The Japanese were defeated by and incredible harsh terrain in Papua New Guinea, the Australian army and their New Guinean allies.
We left our military hanging in the Phillippines to protect the 'Land down under" what a waste of man!
